What is TRP in Kazakhstan and who needs it?
A temporary residence permit (TRP) is an official document that allows foreign citizens to legally stay in Kazakhstan for a certain period of time. This status allows you to reside in the country legally and enjoy a number of rights that are not available during a regular temporary visit.
TRP is especially important for those who plan a long-term stay, labor activity or further registration of a residence permit (residence permit). The document is issued by the migration service and requires compliance with certain conditions and rules.
Obtaining a TRP is necessary when a foreign citizen intends to live, work, study or do business in Kazakhstan. In addition, the permit is required for those who want to reunite with their families if the relatives are citizens of Kazakhstan or have a residence permit. Unlike a short-term visit, the status of a TRP holder allows for freer movement around the country, official employment, opening bank accounts and entering into legal transactions. However, it is important to take into account that TRP is issued for a certain period of time and requires timely renewal.
Grounds for obtaining a TRP
TRP can be issued only if there are legal grounds provided for by the migration legislation of Kazakhstan. The main reasons for which a foreign citizen may apply for a TRP:
- Official employment – availability of a concluded labor contract with a Kazakhstani employer and the relevant work permit.
- Family circumstances – if the applicant’s spouse, children or parents are citizens of Kazakhstan or have a residence permit, it is possible to apply for a TRP for family reunification.
- Study in Kazakhstan – foreign students enrolled in accredited educational institutions can apply for a TRP for the period of study.
- Other grounds – for example, investment activities, participation in international programs or other circumstances that meet the requirements of migration legislation.
Stages of TRP processing
The process of obtaining a TRP includes several consecutive steps that each applicant needs to go through:
Gathering the required documents. The application requires:
Passport with notarized translation;
Proof of the basis for obtaining a TRP (contract, marriage certificate, invitation from an educational institution, etc.);
Medical certificate of absence of dangerous diseases;
A receipt for payment of the state duty.
Submission of an application to the migration authorities. Documents should be submitted to the local unit of the migration police of Kazakhstan, where the applicant will be issued a registration number.
Passing a medical commission. In some cases, an additional medical examination is required to confirm the absence of infectious and socially dangerous diseases.
Reviewing the application and making a decision. On average, the review period takes from 30 to 60 days. During this period, migration services verify the submitted data and make a decision on issuance of TRP.
Obtaining TRP and registration. After approval, the applicant is issued a document and must register at the place of residence in Kazakhstan.

To successfully apply for a TRP, foreign citizens need to submit a full package of documents. The basic list includes:
